Kissing Jessica Stein, 2001
This film, God, where to start? Probably the film wasn’t aimed at lesbians or even bisexual women, but it felt so good at the beginning. Being a queer woman, it’s weird finding interesting, funny and intelligent films in mainstream cinema. I remember when I was younger how much coverage this film got, now I know why.
I loved Jessica and Helen, together and individually. I loved everything about the film, I was so glad I could finally see a film like this about not-straight woman. This is the humor I like in my movies, and I definitely love when female characters are developed and I GO CRAZY when they’re queer. Why? Because, tbh, queer representation is really poor in movies.
So Kissing Jessica Stein: what a way to ruin such a good film in 10 fucking minutes. That was all they needed to crush my heart.
Have any of you seen this film? Any thoughts?
I love this film as a film, but I hate it as a queer film. It’s funny, charming, and it has the best soundtrack of ALL time (all I ever do is talk about the soundtrack when recommending music) but I was a little disappointed at the ending. Okay, more than a little.
